How did I install the NVIDIA *.run package on ubuntu

Log out to the login screen and hit Ctrl+Alt+F1

log in as root

 /etc/init.d/gdm stop

then

sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.35.run

Follow the prompts and finish!
